Today I moved my .PST files and this is the error I received:
"0x8004010F: Outlook data file cannot be accessed"
or
"0x8004010F: The operation failed. An object could not be found"
Most of the forums I found suggest creating a new profile, this was not good news for me because I have 5 different email accounts in outlook. This is what fixed it for me:
1. From Outlook 2010 click File>Account Settings>Account Settings
2. Click Change Folder
3. Click New Outlook Data File (This is just temporary)
4. Give it a name (I used "Test")
5. Click the + to the left of the folder name to expand the subfolders. Click Inbox. Click OK.
6. Then Click Change Folder
7. Click Select the one you want
8. Click the + to the left of the folder name to expand the subfolders. Click Inbox. Click OK.
9. Close Account Settings and click send/receive.
This worked for me. I had one working profile and 2 not. I had to make the non working profiles the default, one at a time, and apply this fix to each and then all works fine.
ReplyDeleteGreat , thank you so much. Have been going round in circles until now. Just another question, my address book has shrunk form 30 odd contacts to just 3 ! Any ideas as I feel this may be linked.
DeleteLes AA
Thanks, this works!!!!!!
DeleteWONDERFUL........ THANK U SO SO SO SO MUCH............ GOD BLESS UR BRAINS
DeleteThanks! This worked! This was much better than having to create a new profile and setup all my email accounts all over again.
ReplyDeleteThank you very much!!!!! I thought I had completely trashed my system. It appears to be working now. You are a life saver. I thank God for people like you you are truly gifted for making IT simple for the common man.
ReplyDeleteThanks, it worked out 4 me as well!
ReplyDeleteThat's amazing - fixed my problem with 2 accounts. Thanks so much, I would never have thought of this fix. Much appreciated! :)
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!! Been trying to fix this for hours! :-)
ReplyDeleteThank you mate, you are magic. You made it soooooooooo easy
ReplyDeleteThanks, this was driving me nuts
ReplyDeleteGordon
Outlook won't let me select "New Outlook Data File". Any thoughts?
ReplyDeleteThanks! This worked.
ReplyDeleteYou sir, are a Godsend!!!
ReplyDeleteYes it worked!
DeleteOne comment, this only works if you have a POP3 account to deliver to. In my case all my accounts were IMAP so setting the delivery folder wasn't an option. To workaround this I had to add a POP3 account (from Yahoo in my case) first, and then set that as the default, then these steps worked.
ReplyDeleteTried this, I have two exchange accounts and added a yahoo account to give this a shot, alas no go. It bombs out on trying to download one of the two offline address books.
DeleteAbsolutely brilliant - thank you!
ReplyDeleteWhy doesn't Microsoft know this stuff? Their solution is far more difficult and tedious.
Wow, that worked like a charm! Never would've figured that out on my own, and I work in IT! Good find!
ReplyDeleteWorked like charm. Thanks so much.
ReplyDeleteSweet! This worked perfectly!
ReplyDeleteyaaaaaay! worked for me after moving file to another drive.
ReplyDeleteNice! Thanks a million!
ReplyDeleteExcellent. Thanks so much for posting. I found similar information on another site, but their directions assumed knowledge I don't have. The step-by-step guide was so helpful.
ReplyDeleteDave in Va.

ReplyDeleteAt last,
ReplyDeleteSomebody that can explain.

Bravo - much better than Microsoft KB "solution" to completely redo the profile. It worked!
ReplyDeleteThanks Very useful.
ReplyDeleteIt works also on Outlook 2013.
ReplyDeleteThank You!
Wow - that was sweet. Nicely done.

Dan from Michigan
ReplyDeleteThis worked for me and I have Outlook 2013. I was setting up my new computer and I used Windows 7 to move my "My Documents" to a platter drive (I have my operating files on my SSD drive). After Windows moved them, Outlook gave me the error. Windows is so dumb.
Thanks for all the help! You da Man!
Dave from UK
ReplyDeleteThis worked for me using Outlook 2013 on Windows 8.
Thanks very much
Thanks! It worked perfect! Searched thru MS KB but really useless!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much. I too have been working on this for about 4 hours. I tried this and it worked!
ReplyDeleteDoug
Was loosing my sanity. This worked perfect!
ReplyDeleteThank you! Having finally upgraded from ANSI .PST to UNICODE .PST (er, 10 years late!) the send/receive fellover. Your suggestion worked and I suspect is a valuable workaround for an "undocumented feature" of Outlook.
ReplyDeleteWorked for me in Outlook 2010 and XP. Thank you
ReplyDeleteThanks buddy, worked for me
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting. Great and easy fix. The folks at M$ should be figuratively shot for not having this fixed.
ReplyDeleteHey Buddy,
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for posting it. I had the same problem as 'Dan from Michigan' when I moved My Documents folder from one SSD to another. Now is fixed an working perfectly.
Cheers,
anderson
Thank you so very much !!! I was going mad here, squandered my Saturday trying to find out what I did to crash Outlook so bad ! I have 4 profiles and after changing their folders only one would fetch my emails, rest of them just 0x8004010Fed my for the whole day ! Your solution worked like a charm !! Thank you again and again !!! Paulo A. Pereira - Sao Paulo - Brazil
ReplyDeleteI'm running Outlook 2010 under Windows 7 - 64 bit.
DeleteThank you very much for posting this.. Just spent 2 days troubleshooting, replacing bad hardware and reinstalling Win7 and Office 2010 on my friends home-business machine.. and this was the last thing that I was beating my head against the wall on. You are awesome.
ReplyDeleteOutlook 2010 on Win7. After trying unsuccessfully several options from microsoft, your simple fix worked. Well done sir!
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to say thanks. I have spent a few days and numerous Google searches and your simple fix did the trick. Clear instructions and it worked...thanks again
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!!!
ReplyDeleteAlso, if you have 2 or more accounts in the profile you have to make everyone of them default and do this process for every account.
ReplyDeleteWith five accounts in Outlook 2010/Win7, one of which is about 12 years old, I was grief stricken until I found this post. You will need to change each account to default and follow procedures, but it worked for all of mine!
DeleteBless you.
Mainer
Yes it works and I'm pleased I found this thread and the solution. I hate Microsoft for nonsense like this.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much. You made the process idiot proof... Blessings to you.
ReplyDeleteThank you - I was ready to give up!!!
ReplyDeleteYou saved my life!
ReplyDeleteafter an hour of pulling my hair, i found this. thanks.
ReplyDeleteOutlook 2013
This solved my problem with Outlook! Cheers! :)
ReplyDeleteI can't believe it worked, God bless you , I spent 4 hours with a Microsoft technician, who couldn't get this working.
ReplyDeleteYou're amazing!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
Thank you man;
ReplyDeleteWith Microsoft it seems like you have to keep trying everything, and a bit of adventure is recommended :P
Thanks very much! Elegant fix to a terrible bug. Never had this problem with older versions of Outlook.
ReplyDeleteAfter a v-e-e-e-ry long fight (so it feels) I finally found this guide, and it worked! Thanks a lot. Just remember to activate the new setting for all your accounts!!
ReplyDeleteWorks! MS tells bullshlt on their sites, their support doesnt work.
ReplyDeleteExcellent! Thank you!
ReplyDelete(it worked for me in Outlook 2013)
WOW Thanks Dude. Your hint just saved me having a stroke.
ReplyDeleteI agree with previous poster. MS support and KB is seriously lacking. If was THEIR guide that I followed when I got into this mess in the first place. c.f. http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/outlook-help/move-an-outlook-data-file-pst-to-different-folder-HA010378229.aspx
Then one of their "help" pages for the error said to create a new profile. Well I have over 7 accounts on my profile, created a few years back. Having to remember my original settings and to recreate those was not part of my plan for a Sunday evening!
This totally worked!
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot sir you saved me a lot, you are genius
ReplyDeleteI found this after dancing the Microsoft sacred dance for this issue several times (to the point of deleting my profile and starting over) with no success. With this I was able to resolve the problem in less that two minutes. THANK YOU!!!!
ReplyDeleteSir,i think i love you xxx
ReplyDeleteYou are a genius, you are a genius, you are a genius!!!!!!!! Thank you SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteYou just ended two hours of frustration. THANK YOU!!!!!
ReplyDeleteWOW - can't figure this out, worked for all the above people but NOT for me???? Did it twice and both times it didn't work. What am I missing?
ReplyDeleteI hate Microsoft I luv you thanks
ReplyDeleteGREAT SOLUTION !!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDelete4 Thumbs Up !!!!
Thank you - after many frustrating days - your instructions are precise and work wonderfully.
ReplyDeleteWOW - great solution . was struggling with this for a while this afternoon
ReplyDeleteThanks, this really helped me out.
ReplyDeleteFriggin awesome thanks mate! Way cleaner than creating a profile :)
ReplyDeleteMany thanks, You make my day !
ReplyDeletehey thanks buddy you're the man i did a system restore to solve this, for a hour or less it worked then i went to my best friend Google and found you thank you so much
ReplyDeleteMuch appreciated! After moving my profile data from C:\Users to H:\Users, I encountered an 0x8004010F error at sending e-mail. The official MS solution didn't work (surprise!). Thought I did something wrong and tried it a few times without succes. Lost about an hour. Your's was just a minute of work. Thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much! I have been trying for hours to find a solution until I found yours. Worked great. Simple and elegant. My outlook problem occurred after re-installing Win 7. Why? Only MS knows....
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! I have umpteen disposable email accounts as well as several actual email accounts. Your advice was invaluable.
ReplyDeleteWOW - this works - Thank you, no one else seems to have this solution..?
ReplyDeleteWorked for me too. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this explanation!
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU!! You saved my a** and my Outlook files!
ReplyDeleteWorked for me too.
ReplyDeleteThank you very much!
Sergio
Worked for me perfectly - thank you
ReplyDeleteRuss
Sadly this isn't working for me: I have two IMAP accounts and a POP3 account and neither of the IMAP accounts work. Stands to reason, since I can't change the folder for the IMAP accounts ...
ReplyDeleteWorked perfectly after hours of trying to fix it. Thank you for posting this simple solution!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you Very Much! This worked perfectly.

ReplyDeleteThanks, man!
ReplyDeleteExcellent! Works like a charm, Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much, U save a lot of time of me.
ReplyDeleteIt worked for me! Thanks
ReplyDeleteThis worked for me in just seconds, after I spent hours wading through other, much more elaborate and difficult fixes that were pure gobbledygook. This one was simple and quick. GOD BLESS YOU!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks
ReplyDeleteThank you! This is the kind of solution---i.e., using a software function in a non-standard way to force buggy or otherwise noncompliant software to do something that it doesn't want to do---that I've often discovered and used myself over the years but had not figured out in this case, where the data file for a new Outlook account that I'd created had to be moved and Outlook couldn't recognize the new location. Again, thank you!
ReplyDeletethank you!!!!!!! i got so nervous since i was doing this at work! looked at a lot and this saved me! thanks for being SO detailed!!!! thanks again!
ReplyDeleteThis worked for me too. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteLet me add my thanks to all those before me and congratulate you for finding and posting such a helpful solution. Well done!
ReplyDeleteHad pst issue in outlook 2013 in win 8.1, This saved me, Easy fix, Thanks
ReplyDeletefantastic don't know how it worked but it did. I have been trying for hours to fix and had a telstra help online chat person too who couldn't help me
ReplyDeleteGreat instructions, worked a treat! Now I just need to repeat it 4 more times. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteThanks! It works!
ReplyDeleteAnother anonymous thank you!!!
ReplyDeleteSimple and easy.
thank you very much. it works
ReplyDeleteThanks - Outlook 2010 moved over to windows 8 - worked for me in minutes after hours of pain.
ReplyDeleteSaved me hours of time! Thanks so much
ReplyDeleteSaved me a lot of hassle too! Thanks a lot.
ReplyDeleteTried Microsoft help and scanpst - neither worked. Only this was the solution - many thanks.
ReplyDeleteI add my voice to the chorus of appreciative internetters, thanking you for helping me resolve this annoying headache.
ReplyDeleteHad to restart Outlook after closing Account Settings in step 9. Otherwise, worked great. Would like to know if ok to delete "test.pst" and how best to do it. Thanks, again.
ReplyDeleteWorked like a treat!!! (Outlook Professional Plus 2013)
ReplyDeleteThanks!!!
I really appreciate this, saved me a lot of time (worked with Outlook 2010 after I moved my pst-files and sending/receiving stopped working)! Thanks.
ReplyDeleteThis was very much appreciated!
ReplyDeleteGenius. Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteGod bless You for this solution and somebody kill Microsoft!!! ;-)
ReplyDeleteThanks for providing such informative blogger which is genuine and helped me to fix outlook error code 0x8004010f. When I got this error I was irritating so searched for its solution and found that many link opened with its solution but this blog page was most informative.
ReplyDeleteMany thanks it worked for me moving all my data from an old Vista machine with outlook 2007 to Win 7 with Outlook 2013
ReplyDelete100% spot on. Major thanks. I had 3 of 5 accounts with the error. I was able to use the same "test" data file for each. I made the test.pst file, pointed the account at it, closed outloook, re started it and no errors. Again. thanks for saving me hours.
ReplyDeleteI found a slightly easier fix for the error. The way I corrected mine (for IMAP accounts) is based on a suggested approach that I read here ...
ReplyDeletehttp://superuser.com/questions/156950/outlook-2010-move-imap-pst-file-outlook-data-file-cannot-be-accessed
https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/0acbed9c-de08-40f7-a77e-2cd0e626d9cb/outlook-data-file-cannot-be-accessed-error-8004010f
Step 1. Exit Outlook (completely)
Step 2. Launched regedit
Step 3. Navigate to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\__name_of_my_active_Outlook_profile__\9375CFF0413111d3B88A00104B2A6676
Step 4. Browse (navigate up and down through this list) the seventeen account entries which have subkeys in that registry key. Note which of them include a value called Delivery Store EntryID ... in my case, four of them did.
Step 5. In each of those (four) subkey registry values Delivery Store EntryID, I modified the name of the value, I just added a letter x on the end, to keep the value handy in the event that I would want to bring it back later on.
Step 6. Launched Outlook
Step 7. Noticed the Delivery Store EntryID values get automatically re-populated by Outlook.
Step 8. Went to the problem email account, successfully processed messages in Outbox ... saw completion with no error.
I think this got rid of the problem for me, with my IMAP accounts in Outlook 2010 and it was easy to do. Larry
Thank you LarryC this solved my problem with Imap.
DeleteYES. This works for IMAP
DeleteExcellent fix! Thanks. No new profile required.
ReplyDelete100% fixed, thanks works a charm on Outlook 2013.
ReplyDeleteSame a few others I have many POP3 accounts to manage so not having to create all those Profiles again saves a lot of time.
Why this isn't Microsofts fix I'll never know, so much easier and quicker than rebuilding you accounts.
Wow thank you! It worked for me too! Although I still didn't understand how or why this worked I'm jus so glad it coz I was spending hours on changin incoming/outgoing settings. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, worked perfectly! You have saved me many hours.
ReplyDeleteThank a lot,
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome
HOLY CRAP IT WORKED!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you sooooo much!!
Thank you too - Brilliant I was getting most annoyed!. visit more info Windows live mail support also Call +1-800-231-4635 (Toll Free).
ReplyDeleteThis worked for my POP accounts, but not IMAP. But then I realized that IMAP accounts are very easy to set up, since the emails are stored in the cloud. So I just deleted and re-created those accounts (enter username and password), and emails were automatically reloaded into Outlook.
ReplyDeleteAfter many searches and long times lost.
ReplyDeleteThis worked perfectly with Outlook 2013.
Thanks. RN
Wow, Thanks. never thought moving a pst file was that difficult
ReplyDeleteworks for POP, but for IMAP it doesnt
ReplyDeleteThanks alot you saved my life
ReplyDeletePure Genius. Such a simple fix. spent hours trying to fix this.
ReplyDelete1000% goood worked SUPER
ReplyDeleteMany users had the problem and all are solved.
ReplyDeletePerfect, you are a genious !!
Works for Outlook 2013 as well, thank you
ReplyDeleteMike
Thank you!
ReplyDeleteSuper, it worked like a charm! Thank you very much!!
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
ReplyDeleteAs I used this method to fix this problem (and see all the others you have helped) I started wondering how the heck you figured that out!
ReplyDeletethanks so much for this.
ReplyDeleteI "tidied" up my outlook .pst files yesterday, and ended up with this error for my main mail file.
The instructions took less than 2 mins - and my mail is working again.
Super nice! Thanks a lot!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!
ReplyDeleteSuper!!! At last the problem fixed!!
ReplyDeleteTHANKS !
ReplyDeletePerfect man!!! Microsoft rules :(
ReplyDeleteMany thanks from Spain!
Thanks! Worked for me!
ReplyDeletethank you so much!!!!
ReplyDeleteyou are the man.
ReplyDeletemicrosoft doesn't mention such option (moving PST).
thanks!
I would like to add my thanks to the legion of people who have also thanked you for this excellent workaround, which worked a treat for me.
ReplyDeleteThank you! This saved me a lot of time.
ReplyDeleteThank you!!! greetings from a happy man :)
ReplyDeletebrilliant - saved a load of time - thx
ReplyDeletePeople like you are the best on the internet.
ReplyDeleteYou have given me my life back. Thank you so very very much. Why can't Microsoft tell us this. You are brilliant!
ReplyDeleteBTW, this worked with Outlook 365 for me.
ReplyDeleteI can't adequately express how grateful I am that there are people like you out there who discover and then publish this kind of unconventional solution, a solution that actually accomplishes what other solutions only *claim* to accomplish. I've been using PCs intensely for @25 years now and have often worked out these kinds of alternative solutions myself, but after having trouble with this Outlook error, I couldn't figure this one out.
ReplyDeleteAnd you should tell Diane Poremsky (slipstick.com) about this one . . . she needs to know! ;^)
Cheers,
George
Thanks for posting this fix, worked for me.
ReplyDeleteYou'd think Micro$oft had implemented an export account settings option instead of having to export registry settings which was what caused this error for me. Thanks for this!
ReplyDeletewooo! thanks a lot!! I just had a weird outlook experience lol and this did the job! one of my secondary HDD's wasn't detected on boot and that HDD is where I kept all of my outlook data (important work emails and such). when that happened I opened outlook and it couldnt find anything so I was very confused. I finally figured out that my secondary HDD (E:) was not listed in the drive manager. so I restarted my computer and bam back to normal. well at least I thought until I realized outlook re-arranged my files when I tried to repair it. needless to say this some how fixed the prob . kudos to sir!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the fix
ReplyDelete
