0x8004010F: Outlook data file cannot be accessed.

Today I moved my .PST files and this is the error I received:

"0x8004010F: Outlook data file cannot be accessed"
or
"0x8004010F: The operation failed. An object could not be found"

Most of the forums I found suggest creating a new profile, this was not good news for me because I have 5 different email accounts in outlook. This is what fixed it for me:

1. From Outlook 2010 click File>Account Settings>Account Settings
2. Click Change Folder
3. Click New Outlook Data File (This is just temporary)
4. Give it a name (I used "Test")
5. Click the + to the left of the folder name to expand the subfolders. Click Inbox. Click OK.
6. Then Click Change Folder
7. Click Select the one you want
8. Click the + to the left of the folder name to expand the subfolders. Click Inbox. Click OK.
9. Close Account Settings and click send/receive.

  1. This worked for me. I had one working profile and 2 not. I had to make the non working profiles the default, one at a time, and apply this fix to each and then all works fine.

  11. One comment, this only works if you have a POP3 account to deliver to. In my case all my accounts were IMAP so setting the delivery folder wasn't an option. To workaround this I had to add a POP3 account (from Yahoo in my case) first, and then set that as the default, then these steps worked.

Why doesn't Microsoft know this stuff? Their solution is far more difficult and tedious.

This worked for me and I have Outlook 2013. I was setting up my new computer and I used Windows 7 to move my "My Documents" to a platter drive (I have my operating files on my SSD drive). After Windows moved them, Outlook gave me the error. Windows is so dumb.

Then one of their "help" pages for the error said to create a new profile. Well I have over 7 accounts on my profile, created a few years back. Having to remember my original settings and to recreate those was not part of my plan for a Sunday evening!

This is the kind of solution---i.e., using a software function in a non-standard way to force buggy or otherwise noncompliant software to do something that it doesn't want to do---that I've often discovered and used myself over the years but had not figured out in this case, where the data file for a new Outlook account that I'd created had to be moved and Outlook couldn't recognize the new location. 134. 100% spot on. Major thanks. I had 3 of 5 accounts with the error. I was able to use the same "test" data file for each. I made the test.pst file, pointed the account at it, closed outloook, re started it and no errors. Again. thanks for saving me hours.

    ReplyDelete
  135. I found a slightly easier fix for the error. The way I corrected mine (for IMAP accounts) is based on a suggested approach that I read here ...
    http://superuser.com/questions/156950/outlook-2010-move-imap-pst-file-outlook-data-file-cannot-be-accessed
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/0acbed9c-de08-40f7-a77e-2cd0e626d9cb/outlook-data-file-cannot-be-accessed-error-8004010f

    Step 1. Exit Outlook (completely)
    Step 2. Launched regedit
    Step 3. Navigate to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\__name_of_my_active_Outlook_profile__\9375CFF0413111d3B88A00104B2A6676
Step 4. Browse (navigate up and down through this list) the seventeen account entries which have subkeys in that registry key. Note which of them include a value called Delivery Store EntryID ... in my case, four of them did.
Step 5. In each of those (four) subkey registry values Delivery Store EntryID, I modified the name of the value, I just added a letter x on the end, to keep the value handy in the event that I would want to bring it back later on.
    Step 6. Launched Outlook
Step 7. Noticed the Delivery Store EntryID values get automatically re-populated by Outlook.
Step 8. Went to the problem email account, successfully processed messages in Outbox ... saw completion with no error.

I think this got rid of the problem for me, with my IMAP accounts in Outlook 2010 and it was easy to do. Larry

I can't adequately express how grateful I am that there are people like you out there who discover and then publish this kind of unconventional solution, a solution that actually accomplishes what other solutions only *claim* to accomplish. I've been using PCs intensely for @25 years now and have often worked out these kinds of alternative solutions myself, but after having trouble with this Outlook error, I couldn't figure this one out.

I finally figured out that my secondary HDD (E:) was not listed in the drive manager. so I restarted my computer and bam back to normal. well at least I thought until I realized outlook re-arranged my files when I tried to repair it. needless to say this some how fixed the prob . kudos to sir!
